Back in 2005, Samsung, the largest and foremost electronics brand in South Korea and the creator of Samsung mobile phones, became one of the leading consumer electronics brand in the world. Samsung Group, which comprises Samsung Electronics, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Samsung Engineering and Construction, forms the base of the company. Samsung is derived from the Korean word tristar or three stars.
Founded by Lee Byung-Chull in 1938, Samsung began as a small trading company in Seoul. The company flourished until the Communist invasion in 1950. Starting over proved to be good for the small company since it grew until Lee was able to found South Koreas first sugar refinery after the war.
Branching into the service industry with securities, insurance, and even a department store, Samsung continued its rise to success. It was not until the 1970s that Lee was able to step into the telecommunications industry. This would be the beginning of Samsung Electronics, which would then produce todays Samsung mobile phones.
It is during the 1980s that Samsung spread its wings globally. The company fully extended its manufacturing, shipping, and, more importantly, the selling of its prime electronic products and its wide range of appliances all over the world. Proof of its stability is the creation of several units abroad: a television assembly plant in Portugal (1982), a $25 million plant in New York (1984), and a $25 million facility dedicated to Electronics (1987). Shortly after, they extended to Asia and Australia where the company continues to strengthen its market.
In 1986, Samsung mobile phones released its first handset. It featured the now-standard CDMA technology, which allowed faster, clearer, and more cost-efficient transfers between phones and cell sites. Since then, the brand has consistently produced mobile handsets at par with its competitors.
Any call, the brand name it uses for its local mobile phones, now incorporates the latest mobile technologies such as video calling, GPS, and high-resolution cameras.
